Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire narrowly missed out on victory at the Senior Men’s County Golf Finals as their final day draw handed the title to Cornwall.

The championship, held at Torquay Golf Club, saw Cornwall become the first team from the South West to secure the trophy since it began in 2005.

After a rain-shortened first day, Cornwall narrowly defeated Lincolnshire 3.5-2.5, while Durham got the better of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire by the same score line.

On day two, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire won 5-4 against Cornwall, while Lincolnshire beat Durham 7-2.

This led to a nail-biting final day with all teams tied on match points, each with a chance to clinch the title.

Despite losing the final day’s morning foursomes to Durham, Cornwall regrouped, winning the afternoon singles 5-4.

This victory meant if Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire drew or only narrowly defeated Lincolnshire, Cornwall would be crowned champions.

Lincolnshire, also vying for their first title, led 2-1 after the morning foursomes.

However, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire’s Gary Mumford held on against Paul Wharton in the final singles match on the last hole to secure a draw and hand the title to Cornwall.
