DES Buckingham is still at Oxford United’s training camp in Spain, as he finds himself among the bookmakers’ frontrunners for the vacant Wales managerial job.

It has been confirmed to the Oxford Mail that Buckingham was still with the squad and coaching staff earlier this afternoon.

United’s promotion via the League One play-offs will undoubtedly mean Buckingham’s stock has risen, and he is the favourite with some bookies to replace Rob Page, who was sacked as Wales boss last month.

Buckingham is 4/6 for the role with Sky Bet, ahead of the likes of Craig Bellamy (6/4) and Thierry Henry (10/1). These odds have fluctuated heavily though, with Bellamy 2/1 and Henry 3/1 earlier today.

Page was sacked as Wales manager almost halfway through a four-year contract that he signed in September 2022.

Wales missed out on qualification for Euro 2024, after losing to Poland on penalties in the play-offs.

June friendlies saw Wales held to a goalless draw with Gibraltar, while also suffering a 4-0 thrashing against Slovakia, prior to Page’s sacking.
