RENAULT failed to score a point for the first time this season as all Oxfordshire’s Formula 1 teams left Barcelona empty-handed.
The Enstone-based team had been a model of consistency in the opening five rounds, but paid the price for a mediocre qualifying session in Spain.
Daniel Ricciardo started 13th and finished 11th, while teammate Esteban Ocon could also only improve by two places after starting 15th,
The former said: “We didn’t expect to have a difficult weekend, but it was very tight out there.
“We were close to the top ten in qualifying and in the race, so we’ll try and find out where we lost those couple of tenths and move on to the next race.”
The two drivers from Grove’s Williams team finished 17th and 18th.
George Russell came out on top against Nicholas Latifi and the Briton felt it was worth trying something different to the cars around them.
He said: “We used an alternative strategy to our main rivals and it didn’t pay off, but we had to in our position.
“There are definitely positives to take away, so I’m relatively pleased with the afternoon.”
Haas, who have a facility in Banbury, had Kevin Magnussen finish 15th and Romain Grosjean 19th.
The latter was left puzzled.
He said: “Our long runs, short runs, everything was fast and competitive on Friday – everything was under control.
“I can’t explain why it was so good then, and not the rest of the weekend. It was a tough day at the office.”
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the race to extend his lead in the standings.
The next race is in Belgium on August 30.
