ABINGDON proved the team to beat at the Oxfordshire Road Relays.

Their A side of Les Newell, Adam Ede, Alex Wall-Clarke, Alexander Pennington, Jack Shayler and Kie Francis won the senior men’s event at Abingdon Rugby Club.

Abingdon enjoyed a commanding three-minute cushion over Banbury Harriers A, whose Skip Snelson posted the fastest time of the day, finishing his leg in 16mins 11secs.

Woodstock Harriers A clinched first place in the veteran men’s race.

James Bolton, Jason Barry, David Cantwell, Hans Price, Rob Linnell and Robert Webster were their team members.

Didcot Runners A claimed the senior ladies’ prize.

Sonka Reimers, Rebecca Rose, Sian Loveless and Emily McLoughlin finished in 1hr 21mins 45secs.

They were three minutes ahead of second-placed Abingdon A.

Eynsham Roadrunners A won the veteran race, with Liz McAllister, Kate Allred, Laura Leach and Tess Evans putting in fine performances.

McAllister set the fastest leg time of 19.15, with Allred second in 19.22.

  • OXFORD City came out on top in the opening round of the Southern League at Horspath.

They scored 321 points to win the Division 3 North fixture ahead of Harlow.

Stephen McCauley starred for City in the A-string throwing events, winning the shot (13.71m), discus (39.31) and hammer (38.07).

Gary Walter made it a clean sweep as he won the same events in the B-string.

Tim Stephens also shone, with success in the A-string 400m hurdles in 56.1secs.

Alice Hopkins led the way for City’s women with victory in the A-string 100m, 200m and shot.

Daisy Palmer triumphed in the 800m, as did Holly Griffiths Brown in the 400m hurdles and Danielle Anderson in the discus.

City were also victorious in the 4x100m, thanks to the efforts of Ruby Parker, Bea Wootten, Meabh Leaney and Eugenia Mutero.
