World championship gold medallist Paul Mattick helped to make it a great day for the host club in the popular Wallingford Long Distance Sculls on Saturday.

Wallingford's Elite coxless quad, stroked by Mattick, who helped Britain's lightweight coxless four to world glory in August, blew away all of the opposition and were 24 seconds faster than any other crew allday.

In the double sculls, Wallingford, stroked by Amelia Van Manen, won the women's senior 2 section, while 15-year-olds Lydia Yerrell and Michelle Sangen took the women's junior 16 trophy.

Other Wallingford successes came from Orlando Warner, in veteran C sculls, and from Briony Cavell in the womens' senior 3 sculls.

Cavell's time was the fastest by a woman on the day.

There were other notable performances from Wallingford's junior 18 boy scullers with placings of second, third, fifth and 12th in a field of 74, while Rosie Williamson came fifth in women's junior 18 sculls.

Wallingford's junior 15 boys coxed quad were pipped by one second by Windsor Boys School, the national gold medallists.

The Wallingford crew's steering broke, leaving cox, Luke Taylor, to navigate while holding the wires together.

The whole event attracted a strong field of 520 boats with nearly 1,000 competitors.
