Abingdon's Chris Smith became the Division 1 champion as the Didcot & District League held their divisional tournament, writes Dan Church.
Smith and his clubmate Paul Garner blew the oposition away in this round-robin event for six players in the top flight In the clash between the pair Smith triumphed 11-4, 7-11, 11-5, 11-4 to make it five victories out of five to clinch the crown.
Garner had to settle runners-up spot alongside Matthew Davies, who lost to Smith in a five-set thriller.
Charlie Lane, who was searching for his sixth successive divisionals title, found the tournament tough following promotion to Division 1, finishing the night with just one vivctory to his name.
A dozen players competed for the Division 2 title, being divided into groups before a knock-out stage.
Marlborough’s Teifion Chamberlain progressed to the semi-finals, alongside Moreton’s Tim Raby and the Upton duo of Stuart Walker and John Talbot.
Chamberlain eased through to the final,where he beat Talbot 11-9, 11-8, 11-8.
Meanwhile an astonishing number of 16 players registered on Thursday night to take part in the Division 3 trophy, The Division 3 competition, which attracted a field of 16, saw Sutton’s Caudiu Silaghi take on Moreton’s Daniel Artene in an all-Romanian final, which the former won 11-4, 11-6, 11-9.
The Division 4 eventdrew only four competitors, but it produced a cracking final between the Marlborough pairing of Ron Wright and Steve Corbin.
After losing the first set, Wright held his nerve to triumph 12-10 in the decider.
Ten players turned up for the Division 5 competition, dividing into two groups of five.
In the semi-finals, Harry O’Higgins defeated Marcham clubmate Keith Merch 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 before seeing Robert Mihalache, from Drayton, dispose of Moreton’s Julian Tate in straight sets.
And Mihalache continued his hot streak with an enthralling 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 12-10 victory in well-contested final.
