Sir, The war memorial is not the only part of Wantage in a ‘shameful state’ (Herald, November 23). As I walk the streets and alleyways I’m appalled at the amount of litter and debris left lying around. A quick scan of hedgerows reveals cigarette packets, soft drink cans, sweet wrappers, plastic bottles and fast-food packaging.
Not only are many residents careless in their disposal of these eyesores but many home owners seem to have given up clearing the borders of their properties. Perhaps they regard it as a losing battle!
If the town is to be restored to something like its former glory then a concerted campaign is needed. Local schools need to educate pupils and police need to pursue and prosecute those responsible.
