Re. The threatened closure of Oxfordshire children’s centres
Sir – Oxfordshire County Council sits on reserves of about £128m and the Vale and South Oxfordshire £8m. These reserves are way above the legal minimum requirement for both councils and that means that both have choices that can be made when it comes to yet another cut in public service.
While I am all for efficient government it would cost just £8m to keep these centres that are not “nice to haves”. They are essential in that they help families to function as families. They fix problems early so that they do not become much bigger using all sorts of services further down the line.
In other words they save a fortune, protect children and stop families falling apart. Isn’t that what you want your money spent on?
My message is this: You should think again. This cut is not good governance or good government; it is cruel and dogmatic.
