The risk of a dangerous structure collapsing has prompted a warning for members of the public to avoid the building and road in Oxfordshire town.

A dangerous structure was identified at 3 West St Helen’s Street in Abingdon last week.

Three residents have been evacuated from the building for their safety, and Pappy's Afro Caribbean takeaway on the ground floor has had to temporarily close.

South Oxfordshire District Council’s building control team took immediate action and has been liaising with the private owner of the property.

Heras fencing has been put up around the building, limiting pedestrian access and narrowing part of the road.

Abingdon North county councillor Nathan Ley said structural scaffolding will be installed next week to secure the building and allow safer pedestrian access through the alleyway to the small courtyard behind.

He said: "While we are resisting closing the road for now, that may have to be done if further inspections show the building is deteriorating.

"Council teams are on call over the weekend to respond quickly if the situation changes."

He added: "Please avoid the area and do not attempt to enter the site. I have been told they will install clear signage for alternative pedestrian routes, but honestly if you can steer clear of this road please do.

"Your patience and cooperation are essential as work is done to make this site safe."
