Oxford United fans who have been on edge about the performance of their team over recent years threw themselves off the roof of the Kassam Stadium.

But it was all for a good cause as about 30 United fans and fundraisers took part in a 114-foot abseil from the roof of the south stand to raise £7,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Joe Bennett, 42, a life-long United fan from Berinsfield who raised £140, said: "I loved it. Not many people can say they've stood on the roof of the Kassam and abseiled off. I did it for my good friend and mentor Brian Mitchell who died last September. Almost everyone in their lives knows someone who has suffered from cancer and it's horrible.

"I hope we raise the roof next year because we've got a promotion to celebrate."

His girlfriend Carole Naegele, 39, who raised £85, said: "It's a fun place to do it. I enjoyed it and didn't think about the danger. It was over and done with too quickly for my liking."

Marie Curie area fundraising manager Jessica Taylor said: "We thought it would appeal to United fans to do something like this."
