ONE part of a mystery has been solved for the organisers of the Woodcote war memorial project, thanks to The Herald - but the other part remains without any sort of answer.

The village is following Wallingford's lead by researching the histories of every man named on the village war memorial and producing a book about them.

The project was inspired by Andy Russell's book, For Your Tomorrow, on Wallingford's war heroes.

Mary Hulbert, who is working on it, wanted information on the Honeybone family firm, the Wallingford masons who made the memorial itself.

She has had many responses and has met members of the Honeybone family to get the information she needed.

But one name on the memorial itself - George Jacob - is still giving problems.

Mrs Hulbert said: "We have not had a single response about it. We ourselves have tried everything - even reversing the name to see if that helped - but to no avail, and we hoped someone out there might have an answer.

"We are most reluctant to publish the book without something about Mr Jacob. At the moment, we do not know what service he was in, or what regiment, or where and how he was killed. It is a real puzzle."

She appealed for anybody who can help to contact her on 01491 680494.
