A new fish and chip shop has opened in Wantage – and it prides itself on not selling pizza.

Wantage Chippy officially opened in Wallingford Street today (Tuesday, March 4) after opening its doors for a taster session on Friday.

Owner Ahmed Elaboussi said: “It was fantastic. It was great support from the local people, great support on social media, as well as people just walking past.”

Mr Elaboussi, who also runs The Panini Shop, said his new business was different from others as it only sold fish and chips.

He said: “I saw the need for a fish and chip shop in what is a small old traditional English market town that is lacking a fish and chip shop.

“You can enjoy traditional fish and chips not mixed with pizza or international food or anything else.

“We have been bombarded by pizza shops in Wantage. I live here, and I have seen people say a lot of negative things about how many we are getting.”

Wantage currently has three pizza shops - Dominos, Caprinos, and Papa Johns – and is set for a fourth with Magnos Pizza applying for planning permission to convert the former Umami delicatessen on Newbury Street.

Mr Elaboussi said Wantage Chippy would also stand apart from other businesses because of its fresh ingredients.

He said: “The cod is crispy battered and not soggy, and all our chips are made from scratch. We peal our own potatoes, and we don’t buy them frozen.”
