After the death of Det Chief Insp Morse - and leading man John Thaw - as the 21st century dawned, the detective's right-hand man Lewis took charge.
Actor Kevin Whately got his own underling in Lawrence Fox's Hathaway and both were common sights on Oxford's streets during filming.
The show, Lewis, found a new fanbase and renewed interest in the original series and Colin Dexter's books which formed their inspiration.
Mr Dexter was frequently seen on scene and made cameo appearances in episodes.
