AN Oxfordshire MP has praised a new local men’s mental health service, visiting in their first week to see first-hand the services they offer and meet with the organisers.
David Johnston, MP for Didcot and Wantage, visited the Cornermen based at South Moreton Boxing Club.
Founded and run by Steve James and John Houston, they aim to improve men’s mental health and tackle the high levels of male suicide nationally, with men accounting for three-quarters of suicide deaths.

Anyone from the local area can use the service, and the Cornermen have a London Taxi which they use to collect people who want to visit.
Attendees will be able to talk through their issues and get advice from trained professionals, as well as have the opportunity to engage in a workout set to their fitness level.
There are a variety of other activities on offer in addition to this including a walk in the countryside and even just getting a haircut. The Cornermen encourage anyone who is struggling to get in touch with them.
Mr Johnston said: “I think this could have a really big impact to help men in the Didcot area and beyond with their mental health.

“Too often men bottle up their feelings and will not talk to people about them but if they come to the Cornermen, they can relax and talk to the friendly people here about how they are feeling and get further support to help them feel more optimistic.”
