A TOWN council has voted unanimously to back the private member’s bill on climate and nature CEE Bill.
Abingdon Town Council’s vote last week follows unanimous support from Vale of the White Horse District Council in December 2021 and previous motions of support from Wantage Town Council and Faringdon Town Council. All major towns in Vale District Council now support the Bill.

The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill provides a legislative framework for 'decarbonising' the UK economy, with linked measures for protecting nature and enhancing biodiversity.
It would make it a legal requirement for the UK Government to commit to policy and measures that limit temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Current pledges and commitments are consistent with three degrees warming.

Gabby Barody, Abingdon Town Councillor and chair of the Environment and Amenities Committee said: "Abingdon Town Council fully supports the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill. We believe the Bill to be fundamental in addressing the declared global climate emergency and look forward to when this becomes enshrined in law. Supporting the Bill is also important in safeguarding the futures of our children, young people and in principle, the next generation."
She added: "The council would also like to acknowledge the organisations in Abingdon that are already working towards carbon neutrality, varied biodiversity and well-being in general.
"This includes the newly established Climate Emergency Centre, acting as a hub to support and promote the great work of our residents, charities, businesses and other organisations."
