THE A34 TRUNK ROAD
NORTHEAST OF CHILTON INTERCHANGE - WEST ILSLEY INTERCHANGE
TEMPORARY OVERNIGHT TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Secretary of State for Transport intends to make an Order on the A34 Trunk Road, in the County of Oxfordshire, under section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road. The effect of the Order would be -

(a) to impose an overnight temporary mandatory 40mph speed restriction on the southbound carriageway of the A34 between points 2000 metres northeast of the 'on' slip road at Chilton Interchange (A4185) and 50 metres south of West Ilsley Interchange overbridge (Bury Lane) at certain stages of the work, an overnight temporary mandatory 10mph speed restriction would be imposed on a length of this carriageway while traffic is escorted through the works area by a convoy system; and

(b) to authorise the overnight closure of the following:

(i) the slip road leading from the A4185 to the southbound carriageway of the A34 at Chilton Interchange,

(ii) the slip road leading from the southbound carriageway of the A34 at West Ilsley Interchange (Bury Lane); and

(iii) the accesss roads leading to and from the "Murco" services (at marker post 57/3) north of West Ilsley Interchange (Bury Lane).

These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake essential carriageway repairs and all associated work.

It is expected that the work would take place for approximately 4 nights starting on or after Monday 25th July 2011 between 2200 and 0600 hours.

The Order would come into force on 23rd July 2011 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months.

During the closure outlined at (b)(i) above, traffic affected would be diverted north on the A4185 to Rowstock roundabout (A4130/A417), north and east on the A4130 to Milton Interchange (A34) and south on the A34 to Chilton Interchange (A4185). During the closure outlined at (b)(ii) above, traffic affected would be diverted to continue south on the A34 on the 'off' slip road at East Ilsley Interchange (Abingdon Road), south on Abingdon Road to its junction with Fidler's Lane and west on Fidler's Lane to join the northbound carriageway of the A34 to West Ilsley Interchange.

The temporary mandatory speed restrictions, slip road closures, access road closuresa nd diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works periods.
